CASE STUDY 2:
ONGOING EXPERT ADVICE TO THE PRINCIPAL CONTRACTOR FOR THE WIMMERA MALLEE PIPELINE
The construction of the pipeline was an enormous undertaking involving over 9,000 km of pipe construction between the Grampians (Lake Bellfield) and all farms and towns in the target area. Although most of the pipe routes were sited on cleared farmland, some areas of native vegetation and crossing of rivers and creeks were unavoidable.
Sunraysia Environmental was engaged by Mitchell Water to:
Provide advice on avoiding and minimising impacts at these sites of ecological significance, and to record unavoidable losses of trees
Conduct internal audits on environmental performance on completion of construction.
The benefits to the client and the State of Victoria were that they were both able to show independent verification of the contractor’s compliance with the Construction Environmental Management Plan, and they could accurately report the tree losses to enable reliable calculation of the required offsets.
